Zuzana Pustaiová’s Safety Report project explores the ways in which public discourse on nuclear energy safety is shaped. For her creative work, Pustaiová chose the Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant as her starting point. Having been born and raised nearby, her work also acquires a personal dimension. The project addresses timely questions that strongly resonate within society – issues of information, assumptions, and individual interpretations in the post-truth era. It reflects on the role of institutional reliability and responsible communication, while examining different perspectives and their impact on public opinion.

]]> Safety report https://www.pustaiova.com/portfolio/safety-report-2/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 11:47:52 +0000 https://www.pustaiova.com/?post_type=phort_post&p=3083 […]Jadrová energetika sa týka prakticky úplne každého, či už sa na ňu pozeráme z pohľadu spotrebiteľa elektriny, alebo z pohľadu obyvateľa čeliacemu potenciálnym rizikám. Je preto úplne prirodzené, že si k bezpečnosti jadrovej energetiky vytvárame vlastné postoje. Zamyslime sa však nad spôsobom, akým sa o bezpečnostných otázkach vytvára verejné povedomie, a ako sa potom formujú aj individuálne názory ľudí. Kľúčovú úlohu zohráva ich najbližšie okolie, rodinná či pracovná informačná bublina, ale aj sociálne siete a médiá. Tie spravidla neposkytujú hĺbkový obraz, ich informovanie je skratkové, a aj z tejto skratky si verejnosť zapamäta len malú časť. Dobrou ilustráciou by mohla byť skutočnosť, že ani ľudia žijúci v tzv. zóne ohrozenia jadrovej elektrárne, ktorých sa problematika bezpečnosti bezprostredne týka, podľa pravidelne sa opakujúcich prieskumov netušia, čo robiť a ako sa správať v prípade jadrového incidentu.[…] 
Názov projektu Safety Report ironicky odkazuje na permanentný proces miešania subjektívneho úsudku založeného na fikciách s realitou, čím sa oboje stáva nerozlíšiteľným. Keď sa tento koncept aplikuje na pojem bezpečnosti, vždy, hoci aj neúmyselne, vynesie do popredia chybné predpoklady, predsudky, nedôveryhodné zdroje, zvýšené pochybnosti a nakoniec obavy a strach. A ten je nakoniec úhlavným nepriateľom bezpečnosti.

The debut by Zuzana Pustaiová titled One Day Every Day (2022) is an ironic commentary on various social norms impacting our daily lives. Commonplace routine, gender stereotypes, and role-playing (depicted in the book literally as ‚wearing masks‘) are few examples of cultural code, which, on the one hand, bind the society together, but on the other, it imposes the often unwanted social pressure affecting an individual’s freedom. In this book, the artist seeks the boundary where the (otherwise useful) behavioral patterns become pathological.
Exploring the intricate relationship between these patterns and broader social phenomena, the book shows deeper layers of institutional limitations conceived by the policy-makers and relayed to the public by the media and via social networks. It brings the reader’s attention to the point that while striving for a better world, one ought not to forget how the individual feels in the realm of all those recommendations, behests and restrictions, imprinted to one’s mind since an early age and while being brought up, only to find that civilizing imperatives often lead to systematic oppression. The idea of rethinking one’s conviction, when it comes to social norms, is further supported by the ‚Leporello‘ layout, allowing for alternative page juxtapositions.

Taking old photographs of her grandparents and parents when they still were young, Zuzana physically alters these images in a multitude of ways: she cuts through them, or punches a myriad of small holes into their surface, she sews on them or covers parts of them with paint, additional paper layers or small everyday items such as stickers, toothpicks, gauze, lace paper doilies, bells, paper clips or even cutlery. In doing so, the artist creates an intricate and intimate dialogue between then and now, between her family and herself.
